In a society such as ours a subversive art would successfully resist all attempts at representation. This implies a difficulty if not an impossibilty of  interpretation. To be effective a subversive art would necessarily function in opacity.

A public art that seeks permission for the use of a space is asking for an extension of a pre-existing privilege. If all privacy is privilege then such forms of public art are not exactly what they proclaim themselves to be. Their space is private, perhaps unavoidably so.

To make art that is experienced as futile is to create something that can reveal what is blind in those who behold it. Everything that is persists, however briefly. To experience something as futile is to miss its persistence, its particular, and perhaps peculiar, strength.
